JOHANNESBURG, (CAJ News)PRESIDENT Cyril Ramaphosa believes measures put in place to save businesses from collapse after the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak in South Africa last year had been effective.

He said the special COVID-19 social grant and the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF’s) COVID-19 Temporary Employer/Employee Relief Scheme, generally known as COVID TERS, had been the most effective.

“This is why the extensive relief measures we put in place were both necessary and urgent,” Ramaphosa stated.

“And, now that nearly a year has passed, we can say that these measures have proved effective,” the president added.

He was writing in his weekly letter, made available to the nation, via the media, on Monday.

The relief measures have been extended until March 15.

“While these relief measures were designed to be temporary, the economy will continue to feel the effects of the pandemic for some time,” Ramaphosa explained.

“Even as lockdown restrictions have been eased, many companies are struggling to cope with the fallout of months of diminished operations and lost revenue.”

South Africa is reporting the worst outbreak in the continent.

It imposed one of the strictest lockdown globally.

More than 1,49 million cases and over 47 900 deaths have been reported.
