NAIROBI, (CAJ News) – KENYA’S independent regulatory agency for the telecommunications sector as well as the biggest operator have denied involvement in the recent death of a blogger.
Blogger, Albert Ojwang (31), died in police custody following his arrest in the western Homa Bay last Friday.
The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) said it had noted with “grave concern” the misleading claims on social media platforms alleging that it provided data on the whereabouts of the deceased to law enforcement.
“This position is factually erroneous,” the regulator stated.
“We categorically distance CA from any involvement whatsoever in this matter,” CA added.
“Our role is confined to oversight and compliance, ensuring that licensees adhere to the prevailing regulatory requirements.”
Safaricom, the mobile network, also issued a rebuttal.
Peter Ndegwa, Chief Executive Officer of Safaricom, said at no point as there is any contact between them and security agencies in investigating or arresting the latter.
“We became aware of his arrest through media reports,” he said.
“Our ask to all Kenyans is to ignore any attempts to incite them and remain firm in demanding accountability through transparent investigations.”
Safaricom assured Kenyans of the security of their data.
