NAIROBI, (CAJ News) – NAIROBI, the Kenyan capital, is to benefit from a technology twinning project with Geneva, the Switzerland capital.
The twinning entails the embracing of the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (or CERN’s) Open Source Ethos in Tech Diplomacy.
Geneva-based CERN is one of the world’s largest and most respected centres for scientific research, operating the largest particle physics laboratory on earth.
Philip Thigo, Kenya’s Special Envoy on Technology, announced the twinning, alongside Mirko Giulietti, Switzerland ambassador and permanent representative to Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia and Uganda.
The twinning comprises capacity-building programmes by way of leveraging both hubs’ strengths in policy, research and engagement.
Joint convenings will be held to share best practices on digital diplomacy, technology governance and ecosystem development.
Nairobi and Geneva are to foster cross-pollination of ideas and deepen professional networks.
Thigo said a highlight of their discussions was the CERN philosophy- an open-source ethos that will be foundational for the impending “Artificial Intelligence Factories.”
“By ensuring that software code, electronics schematics and mechanical design are fully accessible, CERN empowers innovators to study, adapt and redistribute technology for the benefit of all,” the official added.
Established in 1954, CERN comprises 24 member states.
