ADDIS ABABA, (CAJ News) – ETHIOPIAN Airlines Group has officially unveiled a global-standard airport in Wollo Kombolcha, marking a significant step in the national carrier’s push to expand domestic aviation infrastructure.
The new airport facility includes a modern Passenger Terminal, VIP Terminal, and support buildings.
Constructed at a cost exceeding €12 million, the project features a 3,500-square-meter terminal building, an airport rescue and firefighting station, water reservoirs, access roads, and parking facilities.
The inauguration was attended by Arega Kebede, President of the Amhara Regional State, Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO Mesfin Tasew, and senior government and airline officials.
“We are delighted with the completion of our Wollo Kombolcha Airport construction project that will enhance our passengers’ experience,” said CEO Mesfin Tasew.
He added: “This new terminal demonstrates our commitment to growing both domestic and international operations in parallel. We also believe this project will contribute to the socioeconomic development of the surrounding region.”
Ethiopian Airlines currently operates daily flights to and from Kombolcha, offering passengers direct connections to Bahir Dar without the need to transit through the capital city – Addis Ababa.
The improved airport is expected to significantly ease air travel for passengers in north-central Ethiopia.
The launch is part of Ethiopian Airlines Group’s broader domestic expansion strategy, which includes upgrading several regional airports across the country. Kombolcha is one of many targeted facilities in this long-term infrastructure development plan.
As Africa’s largest airline group, Ethiopian Airlines continues to set new standards for aviation in the region by investing in infrastructure that supports economic growth, regional integration, and improved passenger experiences.
