WINDHOEK, (CAJ News) – NAMIBIAN president, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, led the celebrations after compatriot, Peter Shalulile, broke the record for goals scored in the South African Premiership.
The Mamelodi Sundowns striker registered his 130th goal this past weekend to become the all-time top goal scorer in the continent’s most lucrative league.
He scored the only goal of the match as Sundowns beat Stellenbosch at Athlone Stadium in Cape Town.
“This remarkable milestone is a shining example of what hard work, discipline and determination can achieve,” the president stated.
“Your (Shalulile) success reminds us of the power of sports to inspire, unite, and create opportunities, as envisioned in NDP6. You have carried the Namibian flag with pride and set the bar high for the next generation of athletes.”
NDP6 is the sixth National Development Plan.
Fellow Namibian, Jeff Excell, said, “Shalulile’s 130 goals remind us that discipline, humility and consistency still win in a world chasing shortcuts. Namibia celebrates, Africa salutes.”
Shalulile (31) has surpassed South African, Siyabonga Nomvethe, as the all-time top goalscorer. At Sundowns, he has overtaken club legend, Daniel Mudau.
His goals have come in 294 games in the colours of Highlands Park and Sundowns.
“We have to keep going and inspire the generation that comes after us to do the same,” Shalulile said after the weekend victory.
The Windhoek-born striker, a product of Tura Magic FC in Namibia, moved to neighbouring South Africa in 2015.
