DURBAN, (CAJ News) – SOUTH Africans are celebrating a historic moment after the Springbok Women secured a nail-biting 29-24 victory over Italy in York, England, to book their place in the quarterfinals of the Women’s Rugby World Cup.
The triumph was a hard-fought contest, with both sides displaying grit and determination in a clash that kept spectators on the edge of their seats.
Ultimately, the Springbok Women held their nerve in the closing stages to seal the win and advance into the last eight of the global showpiece.
South Africa now joins an elite group of quarterfinalists including Canada, England, France, Ireland, New Zealand, and Scotland. The final spot in the quarterfinals will be decided between Australia and the United States.
The team’s progress marks a significant milestone for women’s rugby in South Africa, underscoring the steady rise in competitiveness and investment in the women’s game. Their victory also serves as inspiration for the men’s Springboks, who are preparing for a high-stakes clash against New Zealand later this week.
Across social media platforms, fans and rugby enthusiasts flooded the team with congratulatory messages.
“Tough cookie, you go girl,” wrote Zacharia Stamatis, celebrating the resilience of the players.
“Well done ladies,” added Regan Manuel. “You have now inspired the Bok men’s team to go and win on Saturday against New Zealand. Just imagine that—you’ve inspired them.”
Others pointed to the growth and learning moments in the match. “Well done to our Springbok Ladies – a hugely improved side/squad, but they should’ve closed out that match in the 78th minute,” noted David King, referring to a missed opportunity to extend the lead through a penalty kick.
Supporters such as Kitta Stassen applauded the achievement, stating: “This is an incredible milestone for South African rugby. The team’s hard work and determination have truly paid off.”
As the celebrations continue at home, the Springbok Women’s focus will quickly turn to the next stage of the competition, where they hope to continue breaking new ground and cementing their place among the world’s rugby elite.
