MBABANE, (CAJ News) – ESWATINI has suspended the production of identity (ID) cards as a result of what the government blamed on technical glitches.
The Ministry of Home Affairs, which is the issuing authority, said it was currently facing a significant disruption in its services due to malfunction of the ID card production printers.
“Consequently, we regret to announce the temporary suspension of ID card production,” said Nhlanhla Nxumalo, Principal Secretary at the ministry.
Production was halted on Wednesday, with no hint as to when the service will be restored.
Home Affairs nonetheless assured citizens that in collaboration with relevant stakeholders, it was committed to address these “technical issues” and resume normal operations as quickly as possible to minimise any inconvenience.
“We are also exploring other solutions to ensure that future disruptions are circumvented,” Nxumalo said.
“Our commitment to restoring ID services to full capacity remains strong, and we are dedicated to meeting the identification needs of the citizens of Eswatini at the earliest opportunity.”
