LILONGWE, (CAJ News) – THE Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) of president-elect Peter Mutharika has condemned unruly behaviour by some supporters during post-election celebrations.
The misconduct followed the Malawi Electoral Commission’s (MEC) announcement last week confirming Mutharika as winner.
DPP Secretary-General Peter Mukhito denounced the actions.
“I strongly condemn any behaviour that undermines our country’s stability and integrity,” he said.
Mukhito singled out harassment of Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) personnel and derogatory remarks against the judiciary.
These institutions were perceived by some DPP supporters as sympathetic to the defeated Malawi Congress Party (MCP) candidate, Lazarus Chakwera.
“Such behaviour is unacceptable and reminiscent of the conduct that led to our removal from power in 2020,” Mukhito said.
Mutharika is expected to be sworn in within 7 to 30 days of the results being declared.
He was officially announced as president-elect on Wednesday.
