ADDIS ABABA, (CAJ News) – THE African Union Commission (AUC) has congratulated the continent’s national teams that have secured qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Algeria, first-time qualifiers, Cape Verde, Egypt, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Morocco, Senegal, South Africa and Tunisia have qualified.
“I warmly congratulate our nine African teams whose outstanding performances have brought pride and joy to the entire continent,” said AUC chairperson, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf.
He added: “These teams carry the hopes of over a billion Africans. I wish them every success as they prepare to compete at football’s highest stage.”
The chairperson, from Ethiopia, also expressed appreciation to FIFA for increasing Africa’s World Cup quota from five to nine teams.
“(It’s) a decision that reflects growing confidence in African football and offers more nations the opportunity to showcase their talent and culture to the world.”
Canada, Mexico and the United States will host the tournament.
This tournament will be the first to include 48 teams, expanded from 32.
