YAOUNDE, (CAJ News) – A TECHNOLOGY executive has accused the government of engaging in a digital warfare against critics following the conclusion of national elections in Cameroon.
Rebecca Enonchong, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of AppsTech, alleged her account was among those targeted, alongside those of opposition candidates.
“I’m not telling you how many times they’ve tried to take down my Twitter (now X) account!” she said.
Enonchong alleged social media accounts were being deleted “left and right.”
“All the crowdsourced websites for tallying results have been hacked or compromised. All of them!”
The executive said bots had been redeployed to smother any anti-regime voice.
“Add to that the baby sardines on a paid mission, sometimes in the name of a party they don’t even belong to,” she said.
“If only they used the same energy and the same technology to process the real results instead of sabotaging the truth.”
Elections Cameroon (ELECAM) is under fire for handling the polls after allegations of vote rigging.
The agency is under law supposed to release the results 15 days after elections. Polls were held on October 12, with Paul Biya (92) seeking another term.
However, despite official results not being released yet, opposition leader, Issa Tchiroma, has declared himself the winner.
Violence hence broke out in parts of Cameroon.
Dr Enow Abrams Egbe, ELECAM chairperson, has urged stakeholders to reject hate speech, electoral disinformation and manipulation after the presidential election.
