NAIROBI, (CAJ News) – KENYAN police have launched a search for the prime suspect involved in a recent attack that led to the death of ten officers northeast of the country.
The members of the elite General Service Unit (GSU) officers lost their lives after their vehicle ran over improvised explosive devices (IEDs) at the Garissa County (Province) on October 12.
Police have named Abdullahi Banati, an alleged member of the Islamist Al-Shabaab, as the chief suspect behind the planting of the explosives at the Kenya-Somalia border.
“Police have traced the activities of Banati and his team of militants to the border and it is suspected that he escaped to Somalia with the rest of the operatives,” the police said as they declared Banati wanted.
The police believe Banati and other militants planned this and other attacks from the Daadab refugee camp.
It is one of the world’s largest refugee centres but has over the years emerged as a breeding ground for the Al-Shabaab terrorists.
Police believe most attacks against the public and security forces are planned from the facility, which is home to thousands of Somalis fleeing the civil war in their country.
Among these attacks include the killing of two Kenyan soldiers and 11 Al-Shabaab militants in a military camp in 2015.
