JOHANNESBURG, (CAJ News) – A DARK cloud has befallen South African and Zimbabwean football with the death of goalkeeper, George Chigova.
He was 32.
Reports indicate he passed from a heart-related ailment on Wednesday at his home in Gauteng.
The Zimbabwean was last in the books of Supersport United in South Africa. His contract lapsed in June.
Supersport expressed sadness at the demise of the giant goal minder.
“We convey our deepest condolences to his family and friends both in South Africa and in Zimbabwe during this difficult and very sad time. May his soul rest in peace.”
Chigova had two stints with the club, having joined in 2014 from powerhouse, Dynamos Football Club, in Zimbabwe. He rejoined SuperSport in 2020 after having played for Polokwane City from 2015.
“George was a great club man, a gentle giant loved by current and former players and everyone at the club,” Supersport stated.
Even though his official time with the club ended, the club said he was a regular visitor to the training ground and stadium to support the team.
Chigova played around 150 matches in South Africa.
The Footballers Union of Zimbabwe (FUZ) mourned the player.
“The thoughts of everyone at FUZ are with the family and many friends of George Chigova. As a player and as a person, George was one of the best in the Game. A defining figure for club and country, he was – and he will remain – a true legend of our game.”
Chigova played eight games for Zimbabwe.
The tragedy comes days after the death of former Zimbabwe coach and midfielder, Rahman Gumbo, and South African striker, Bonginkosi Ntuli.
