DAKAR, (CAJ News) – CHINA has alerted its citizens in Senegal to individuals and syndicates robbing these nationals of their motorcycles.

A popular mall in the West African country is the epicentre of the criminality.

The Chinese ambassador to Senegal Xiao Han expressed waryness at the trend around the Sea Plaza shopping mall in Dakar, the capital city.

It could not be ascertained how many Chinese had been robbed of their vehicles but the fact that the embassy has issued a security alert is a sign how this is degenerating into a crisis.

Following the spate of Chinese getting robbed of these vehicles at the Sea Plaza, the embassy has reminded its citizens and institutions in Senegal to pay attention to the local security situation, enhance self-prevention awareness, stay alert when going out, keep valuables properly, avoid using mobile phones while walking and try to walk in groups as much as possible.

In the event of an emergency, citizens are advised to remain calm and respond, prioritise personal safety and call the police.

Senegal is largely peaceful but the West African country has recently been edgy amid political problems with presidential elections set for February 2024.

Demonstrations have taken place in many places for months as critics of President Macky Sall accuse him of bulldozing into an unconstitutional third term.

The Chinese embassy has during the protests issued security alerts, advising citizens to pay attention to the local security situation, enhance self-protection awareness, increase vigilance and strengthen prevention measures.
