ABUJA, (CAJ News) NIGERIAN police have initiated a crackdown to arrest suspects behind the killing of a Catholic priest and the abduction of five pastors in separate incidents.

Rev. Father Paul Offu, in charge of St. James the Greater Parish Catholic Church Ugbawka in the southeastern Enugu State was shot dead on Thursday.

Men suspected to be Fulani herdsman allegedly murdered him while he was returning to his parish last Thursday.

On Friday, unknown men also kidnapped pastors from the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) on their way from the eastern town of Ogbere.

They were on their way to a conference in Lagos.

Inspector General of Police, Mohamed Adamu, has ordered massive operation to arrest the perpetrators.

Consequently, detectives from the IGP-Intelligence Response Unit, the Forensic and Homicide sections of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) have been deployed to Enugu.

Police have also intensified operations for the rescue of the five pastors.

Frank Mba, Nigeria Police spokesman, said while condemning the killing of the priest and the abduction of the clergymen, Adamu called for calm and assured that the perpetrators would be arrested.

“He (Adamu), therefore, enjoins the public to avail the police with credible information that will assist in apprehending the criminals,” Mba said.

Offu’s murder comes five months after the killing of Fr Clement Ugwu, the parish priest of St Mark Catholic Church, also in Enugu. Last year, Rev. Fr. Paulinus Udewangu of the same church was kidnapped while jogging.

JOHANNESBURG, (CAJ News) A global executive believes South Africa can be a leading world economy in the 21st century if it leverages transformative technologies to boost its productivity and innovation capabilities.

Such technologies mentioned by Dr Mohammed Madkour include fifth generation cellular network technology (5G), artificial intelligence (AI) and Cloud.

“The confluence of cloud, AI and 5G technology will enable quantum leaps in the efficiency of industry, the prosperity of economies and the quality of life,” Madkour, Huawei Vice President for Wireless Networks Marketing and Solutions, said.

He was speaking at the first annual Huawei ICT Editors Xchange event in Johannesburg recently.

The session focused on South Africa’s move towards digitisation and how step changes like 5G connectivity would benefit society.

“We just need to ensure that this (adoption) takes place within an open, integrated and inclusive ecosystem,” Madkour said.

“5G, AI and the Cloud are tools. These tools will not transform our society. People will do that,” he added.

Madkour said people would be able to do that if they were equipped with the right skills to use these technologies effectively.

This, he said, would enable them to unlock endless possibilities offered by 5G, AI and the Cloud.

Farouk Osman Latib, from Huawei Cloud Africa, described the Cloud as “a runway.”

He said 5G, AI and the Internet of Things ‘IoT’ as “engines that will enable society to take flight.”

Latib thus emphasised the importance of people to be equipped with the relevant skills.

“We are now in an era where connectivity is a basic need. Connecting to the Cloud is becoming essential, because it will be the enabler of all future digital technology,” he said.

The event in Johannesburg was held at a time the industry is awaiting government’s long-awaited spectrum auction.

Initially set for 2017, it was postponed amid differences between government and industry regulators over the process.

Madkour said the licencing of more spectrum and incentivising usage of 5G would boost business and bring data prices down.

Nozipho Mngomezulu, an ICT lawyer, concurred.

“We currently have a situation whereby something (spectrum) is essential but is a scarce resource,” she said.

HARARE, (CAJ News) ZIMBABWEAN civil society organisations have accused the government of violating citizens’ rights following the outbreak of typhoid affecting hundreds of people.

More than 800 cases of the water borne disease have been recorded this year in some high density areas of the capital city, Harare.

The Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) and Community Water Alliance (CWA) expressed dismay.

“ZLHR and CWA are appalled that in 2019, we continue to record outbreaks of cases of typhoid, a medieval water-borne disease that is largely preventable,” they stated jointly.

“This is an indictment on local and central government and exposes gross negligence on the part of the state that continues to dismally fail to fulfill constitutional obligations.”

The organisations argued the prevailing situation in the suburbs of Glenview and Budiriro was an infringement to citizens’ fundamental rights to health care, right to clean, safe and potable water as well as dignity.

CWA and ZLHR reported that over the years, they had repeatedly highlighted the key drivers of the outbreak of typhoid and other waterborne diseases to government.

Causes include the erratic supplies of clean water in most urban communities, supply of contaminated water and failure to attend to the leaking of raw sewage into the environment.

The typhoid outbreak is the latest test to Zimbabwe’s struggling health sector.

In March, the country embarked on a first typhoid vaccination campaign in Africa.

Then, 17 people had been reported dead.
